    Joomla Offline / Online

    I'm just starting on the road to Joomla fun and wanted to clarify something about uploading my site.

    Am I right in thinking all I need to do is.

    Backup my SQL data using PHPadmin
    FTP my site data from my offline site to my web provider.
    Restore my SQL data on my web server.
    Change the data in configuration.php

    Is this right?

    Also, is it just the WWW folder that gets uploaded?
    If I want to play with it offline do I just reverse the process.
    I'm just a bit unclear about the mods I install, will they get uploaded with my FTP data and my SQL data.

    I tried moving my data between a couple of computers at work but it didn't work. I got joomla.php file errors, even when I deleted everything off the machine and stopping all the services ???????

    Thanks for any advice, I am living on the Joomla forum at present.

    Yes you are right.

    Also, is it just the WWW folder that gets uploaded?
    Just the folder containing the site either www or htdocs for example.

    I'm just a bit unclear about the mods I install, will they get uploaded with my FTP data and my SQL data.
    Yes

    Out of interest what are you using for your offline dev?

    Re: Joomla Offline / Online

    I just do what the ITIDIOTS tell me and am using Vertrigo although I have been using Ravesnwood just to learn it.

    I have to use my laptop at home though with Ravenswood because I put XP 64 on my main PC.

    Not used Vertrigo but if it is anything like apache2triad then try the following steps.

    1. Upload a copy of your site from within the htdocs folder to the root of your webserver.

    e.g if your dev site is located \htdocs\test then upload the contents of test to the root of your webserver.

    2. Using phpmyadmin export your demo sites SQL database to file.

    3. Using phpmyadmin on your webserver delete all the current tables on your database, and then import the sql file you have just created.

    4. Edit the following lines of the configuration.php

    Code:
    $mosConfig_absolute_path = '%change this%'
    Path to site as your server sees it eg /data/htdocs/school name

    Code:
    $mosConfig_cachepath = '%change this%';
    eg /data/htdocs/school name/cache

    Code:
    $mosConfig_db = '%change this%';
    Name of your live database from step 3

    Code:
    $mosConfig_live_site = 'www.livesiteaddress.co.uk;
    Your sites address

    Code:
    $mosConfig_password = 'password';
    SQL database password

    Code:
    $mosConfig_user = 'username';
    SQL username

    This is what I have done in the past and works a treat.

    Hope it helps.

    Thanks for that.

    I'll give it a try with my VPC at work when I've got a minute.

    Re: Joomla Offline / Online

    Works a treat thanks. My DB name was different when I imported it so I got website unavailable but I changed the name in the configuration file and it works now.

    Think I'll work through the tutorial Sysman_MK has posted now and see if I can get that working. Also seen a very nice one on Rockettheme so I might invest in a membership for that too.

    Thanks Again
