A local business owner has approached me asking if I could set up a website for him. While I have played around with web apps and content a fair bit this has always been on inhouse servers at work. So I'm at a bit of a loss as to who's good and who's bad in the hosting and DNS name registration business these days?

4th March 2010, 03:42 PM #4 I use UK Reseller Hosting & Multiple Domain Hosting - BPWEB (9), Managed Dedicated Servers, VPS and Colocation Services at RapidSwitch (2) and Goscomb Technologies - Colocation, Hosting, IP Transit and Dedicated Servers in London (1) and have had fault-less service from all of them for varying numbers of years, indicated in the parentheses. Still a current customer of all.
I host stuff myself too, on a custom basis.

5th March 2010, 05:05 PM #5 CSNM used them for both the school site and my personal sites... never had an once of trouble, even when asking questions in which they would be perfectly within their rights to say "sod off"

8th March 2010, 10:52 AM #9 Has anyone got any experience of using AWS (Amazon Web Services) to host a virtual dedicated server?
For a small business running any kind of web apps or multimedia I like the idea of a nearly instantly scalable solution but am a bit nervous about trusting data and web apps to "the cloud".

I have a reseller account at hostgator.com and I love it! I have a few websites I made for clients and now I host them rather than someone else getting paid for it. If I remember rightly I am paying about £200 a year for the reseller account.

It can be done, just costs a lot more than usual. It's about $0.04 an hour which works our around $350 dollars a year without storage/bandwidth costs.

Take a look at the Grid Hosting.

21st March 2010, 12:14 AM #13 Another vote for Carl at CSNM. Can't fault anything about the service.
He does like to use shaving foam instead of toothpaste - but, it takes all sorts I guess
