Sorry if this has been posted before.
I have just finished updating our schools intranet, but looking at it, it doesn't seem to have very much on it what i would really like to know is: who else has a school intranet? What server software are you using e.g. IIS, Apache? And what do you have on your intranet?

9th September 2009, 10:57 AM #2 WAMP running a Joomla blog style site.
bloggings of staff annoucements and comments...
Some resources like telephone lists, and email groups (.pdf's)...
Quick link buttons to email/VLE/booking system etc....
Emergency Annoucements bar at the top.
Polls towards the bottom the page (to get people to read all the way down to the bottom)
Oh and most important of all a Google Search bar.

16th September 2009, 07:37 PM #4 Run a real web server if you dont have one all ready. If it will just be for school employees it makes it that much easier. Utilizing wamp for a production style website can cause major security issues. Wampp or Xampp are not designed to use with a production site but merely a development site.

I'm sure there is a script to harden Xampp and several websites out there on how to make sure Xampp is secure enough to be a production server.
If it is on the internal network only does it need to be as secure as a public facing website? Maybe some basic hardening would be enough and the changing of all the root passwords. I'm not saying it is or isn't, but canvassing opinion.

16th September 2009, 08:25 PM #6 I've just set up another Joomla site to run alongside our school site as a bit of a file store.
I used a component called Remository along with userport and rokwebify template to allow different security control over folders on the site then created folders for each department.
It works really well, just got to create a idiots guilde for it now.
1) sit at a computer
2) switch on the computer
3) go for a break
etc etc etc

We're lucky enough to have a solution that has been designed for purpose in a bespoke manner. Sitting on IIS/PHP with a MySQL back end, the school intranet 'Mark II' is custom delivered to the users (staff, students and soon parents and governors), providing an efficient platform for content delivery. Many of the school's administrative tasks utilise this system, delivering dynamically generated emails, PDFs and RSS Feeds directly to the recipient (staff and parents). Through growing integration with other SQL based systems, such as SIMS, data consistency is now high and duplication of DB Admin tasks minimal. Page/Directory security is LDAP based and uses Active Directory to authenticate users using IWA. Examples of applications within the intranet are Work Tracking, Behaviour Monitoring, Performance Tracking, Rich Media Delivery, Biometric Purse Monitoring and so on. The difference it's made to the ICT Support Team has also been huge, shipping out those old password changes and the like. This is now all done through our AJAX Student Details interface. Our in-house Webmaster liaises closely with staff on development projects and the focus is always on efficiency and usability, keeping modules as integrated and streamlined as possible.
