    I get this error when I try to run the command as www-data

    Code:
    ERROR: Could not send signal 1 to process 4371: (1) Operation not permitted

    Geoff - just to keep you updated, your instructions worked a treat - it was my own n00bery that was failing me.

    I had the PHP as
    PHP Code:
    shell_exec(`squid3 -k reconfigure`); 
    Someone over at the Ubuntu forums kindly pointed out that I needed to use sudo still

    PHP Code:
    shell_exec(`sudo squid3 -k reconfigure`);
