    Web hosting on site?

Does anyone physically host their school website themselves?

Is it possible via local schools broadband system? Ours is E2BL.

If so, any hints & tips?

    Thanks,

In Lancashire we have given some schools reverse proxy boxes to do this, but our default hosting package is fantastic in itself (and free). What hosting does your RBC provide and why do you want your site in the school?

    Re: Web hosting on site?

At present we're supplied FOC with an uncontended 2Mb (promised upgrade soon) from a consortium including BT, Unisys, Cable & Wireless, RM & Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. Usual hassles getting port settings changed - it took the best part of 2 years to open up a port so we could administer our own website & Emails (hosted externally) without using an emergancy dial-up link. Turned out the port was blocked on the RM Cache that does the SafetyNet web filtering.

Several of my student geeks host their websites themselves and are quite keen to do the same for our website (always happy to use enthusiastic volunteers!). It's costing us a fair bit for hosting, mainly due to the ever-increasing size of our Moodle site. So just interested in gathering info. about viability of doing our own hosting.

Really must sort out Skype sometime!

Eeek! In Lancashire we give all schools their own Moodle hosted by us and online storage for every pupil. Don't your RBC offer you free hosting?

Asleep I think. We have been quietly introducing new features and facilities, all based on our new web and storage array.

    Re: Web hosting on site?

I contacted lancsngfl and they said that only 1 school is using a reverse proxy now and to contact cleo about it which I will. However I didnt know anything about student online storage (although I can see a few stumbling blocks, we have very restrictive internet by demands of the teachers) but of course I would want to host it all myself on my own server so I can blag myself a nice new one.

So could someone tell me about this online storage ?

The MyLGfL service. We installed a huge storage array late last year to host all of the school sites\Moodles on. As part of this the web team had been developing the MyLGfL facilities, and it's all free. Contact the team on 01257 516379 I've let them know you are going to ring. They will show you how it works.

    Re: Web hosting on site?

We have a connection from the SWGfL and i fax a change request to them they unfilter a port, give me the IP address and I host whatever I want, our homepage will be hosted locally (when it works) as well as resources that students can access in college and at home.

This works for us as I know a lot about PHP and such and can add / change / install whatever we need on the servers.
