Re: School website hosting - is this ok?

Without wanting to teach grandma how to suck eggs I started out with hosting about 8 years ago and saw the likes of MCHost, and fasthosts when they were a bunch of rip off merchants...

The industry may have matured a little but frankly the old saying holds true
    Pay peanuts, get monkeys
Hosting inhouse is time intensive, requires a lot of time learning the ropes and if/when it all goes horribly wrong and some 7337 h4x07 tag shows up instead of your website you'll look a right chump. Find somewhere that supports the site, doesn't charge the earth but obviously has a good rep'. It beggars belief when everyone starts yelling "Aw, do it in-house, you'll be fine" when the truth is that a web-server admin role takes a lot of time to learn. £20 compared to hundreds of hours on google, etc.. when you could be resolving other problems and creating more stress for yourself just seems a little disingenious. And let's not go down the issues of security when you open your network!

When it comes to hosting too... you gotta do the math. If a hosting firm is going to charge you £20 for a site for a year, they have to be bringing in at least 100 sites a month or more just to pay the bills so you have to wonder who provides the tech support and how quickly. Add to that, who are your server buddies likely to be if it's cheap as chips?

Sorry, something of a rant this is turning into but seriously it costs money or time, and often your sanity...

*sigh*... ok, time to get me coat..

We also ditched Streamline due to inflexibility and other issues.
We now use CS New Media - Windows web hosting linux web hostng uk asp.net 3.5 SQL Server 2005 AJAX Helm reseller hosting plesk reseller - absolutely the best hosting service I've used and Carl's customer support is second to none.

I do hosting myself, as antp said.. i must say though im pelased that CS New media are 'bigged up' glad to see someone like myself trying to offer affordable hosting with great support.

Too many hosting companies (especially the bigger ones) screwing people over..
