Mysql command line statement doesn't do anything

I'm trying to import a large sql dump (~250MB) and failed via mysql query manager so am trying via the CLI. When I am at the point where is says "mysql>" I type in the syntax (mysql -u <user> -p <dbname> < <sql path> - obviously I am tryping in the correct info) however the cursor just moves to the next line and outputs "->" without doing anything?

Nowhere I have read suggests this shouldn't just work. What reason would there be for the cli to just go to the next line and do nothing?

From the looks of that you're already in mysql command line, you need to quit that, then run the command you've entered. the -> is because it's expecting and SQL query ending with a ; and you haven't entered that. (ie from a normal prompt/bash prompt)

Yeah sounds like you in mysql Client.

The command your using is just to be run from the shell.
