Internal hosted website address same as FQDN address - unable to access internally.

Hi all, looking for a bit of clarification.
We have a website which we have setup internally on Wordpress using Ubuntu. for example the address is: www.school.region.sch.uk
This is the same as our FQDN internally, whilst this all works lovely the only way I can get to my website internally is to browse to http://website - I added a A record in DNS to point to the IP address of the web server.

When ever anyone googles us the results bring back out www.school.region.sch.uk which users are clicking and are unable to access the site - page cannot be displayed.

What is the easiest way round this? Is it to put in some type of redirect or to change the Wordpress install to listen to anything on www.region.school.sch.uk?

isnt that how its supposed to work and why you often use .local/.internal as a domain name

You would likely need to an additional DNS zone to your internal DNS with the name www.region.school.uk and point the A record to your internal server. YMMV.

what is returned by nslookup for the site name,

have you configured seperate A records on the local DNS server and the public DNS server for the different IP's

    nslookup returns:
    *** domaincontroller.school.region.sch.uk can't find www.school.region.sch.uk: Non-existent domain.

I have an external IP which points to our TMG - so external traffic coming in works fine.
I have purchased a new external domain (www.schoolname.co.uk) I could simply ask for a redirect on our www.school.region.sch.uk to point to www.schoolname.co.uk ? That might be the easiest option?
