License for Music on VLE

Anyone know what licence is needed to put copyright music up on a school VLE?

Our music department would like to be able to put tracks up that they want students to listen to outside of class...

The Performing Rights Society might be a good place to start.

I think most schools have a licence but it depends on what you are doing with the material.

Ask PRS (and pay them moneys).

When you say listen to outside of class do you mean streaming or actually being able to download the track for use away from the VLE?

The intention would be to 'stream the files - but only in the sense that they would appear in a flash based player - I wouldn't plan on doing anything particularly clever to prevent them from finding the URL of the actual MP3 file...

I'm not too sure but I think that streaming is "less" of an issue to being able to download the file. In effect you are turning your VLE into Pirate Bay :-)

I had a dig through the PRS website and it looks like this might be the best licence:
Limited Online Exploitation Licence (LOEL)

Anyone have any experience of this? What would I need to do to qualify for 'limited download/streaming' instead of 'permanent download'?

If you could find a way of providing your own DRM type protection to tracks then I think that would qualify you for the LOEL licence.

DRM protection gives the ability to protect a track in such a way so that it can only be played until a certain date, or a certain number of times etc. Unsure of how you would go about applying your own DRM though. I'll have a look into it.

Is it inside your school's curriculum?

This would be part of the school curriculum (part of the music technology A-level course), but none of the licences seem to mention online broadcast etc...
