How to get Sharepoint going in your schools

Mike and the team at Twynham have been beavering away over the last few weeks and Mike has been slowly releasing chapters of an ebook on his blog about how Twynham have used their gateway to make a difference.

Most of it might seem common sense, but it is so good for someone to stick it down on paper, as well as all the other aspects that have made the difference in embeding sharepoint at the school.

Pop over to E-book launch and three year anniversary of Twynham School SharePoint Learning Gateway : SharePoint in Education to download the eBook and leave you comments.

was at Twynham yesterday to talk about their Sharepoint implementation. A very helpful school.

Ironically, the link to the ebook/blog is blocked by the SWgFL

Although Twynham are doing it as a locally hosted implementation there are many aspects that can still be implemented on hosted systems.

That very much depends on how flexible the hosts are though really. For example, our LEA host our Sharepoint/Learning Gateway sites for us, but have said we can do pretty much what we want with it, so long as we don't expect support for anything outside what they list. Also, if we break something, it could end up with a restore from backup or a bill.

Some hosts will not be as friendly - ie. this is what you get and that's it attitudes.

    @GrumbleDook:

Why Sharepoint as a matter of asking?

    Just a question?

Just reading the ebook right now. Is any of the Twynham team on edugeek as it would be good to ask a few questions?

on a serious note ... because a number of folk here are interested and I thought I would share ... there are a goodly number that also do it for other platforms too ... it would be nice to have those on here too.

I'm at the stage where I have sharepoint on the server and an external portal link to the sharepoint server.

Currently looking into what data should go up and how it should look etc.... right now its looking like a massive job to get sorted before its released to the staff and students.

Insparation and idot guides/tutorials on how to build and edit would be good

How to get Sharepoint going in your schools

    Hi All

Both myself and Chris McKinley are on Edugeek but would be easier to ask us questions via our twitter accounts @davecoleman146 and @crmckinley we will try to answer as many as we can also if there is an Edugeek conference this year we may get asked to speak or hold an open forum on SharePoint. You may also want to check out our Blog at Chris and Dave's SharePoint And Tech Blog lots of info there on SharePoint 2007 and 2010.

    Thanks

    Dave

Have a look at the kraal website for examples of other schools SharePoint installations, and for guidance on design. You can also contact us at Blatchington Mill if we can help you....
