I have just been handed the school VLE.
Having never used sharepoint ever before, I am trying to get to grips with it.
My first problem is simple the drop down menu which is applied to every page. This doesn't drop down on some pages, on the home page it hides some bite behind the newsticker which displays beneath.
Basically I feel like I'm holding an angry kitten which could bite me at any point - if the pages all go wrong it will be my point. So if anyone has any ideas of how I can make a start to either understand sharepoint until I talk my way onto a training course, or just to change the settings on the main menu so the drop down doesnt hide, or at least drops down on evey page I would be a little bit happier.
Thanks
Laura
Hi Laura,
Are you useing Firefox or IE? Is it the site actions button you are describing?
![]()
no it's the main menu for linking to other pages that stretches across the top(like the news, forums, chat bit along the top of this page - if that had a drop down function it would be hiding behind the VLE bar now...happens in firefox, chrome and ie.
the bar thats under the title of your site name?
Yep thats the one!
Thats called your global navigation bar and am i right in thinking that you want that available on each page you go too?
If thats the case goto site actions>site settings.modify navigation. Then all the navigation settings are available there. In the Navigation editing and sorting box it shows what your global navigation links.
Thanks,
I looked at the settings in there, I can't find anything apart from visibility...I think it must be the newsticker not the navigation bar. unless there is a setting to show priority of displaying the navigation links over everything else??
Might be worth if you can, having a copy of your live sharepoint install on another box, if your only new to it rather then playing / working on the live site. That way, any problems you do cause will not reflect on your on the end user.
It's most likely the theme, its probably the news ticker style (CSS) which is causing issues rather than the global nav - However not seeing the theme thats strictly a guess.
