We use uniservity, i think it cost £4,000.
Its not worth it!

I think it all depends upon the skillset of yourself and your team plus the features that you require.
A technically competant team with sufficient time will be able to implement Moodle for the cost of a server.
If you want a fully installed solution that integrates with your MIS and runs on Sharepoint, expect to pay a lot.
The question is, is it worth it? Will your teaching staff make full use of an all-singing-all-dancing solution?

Also are you after learning platform or a vle two very different things.
Russell

Don't tell us that!two very different things
I thought they were the same - whats the diff?

Simon
our staff are being forced to use it!
We're currently implementing Talmos which is from Azzuri... it's cost A LOT of money on account of having 2 new shiny servers with it!

Slightly OT... Is this going to make them embrace the technology? If staff request something or are given the chance to slowly develop the skills (maybe trying out the system with a few classes at a time) they are much more likely to continue using it and to make good use of the solution put in place.
'Forcing' staff to use a VLE/LP will simply lead to them resisting the change and will mean that any investment you make could be wasted.
Anyway... just a thought![]()
Get an old PC and load up debian and moodle.
This is not gonna take much more that a morning to do (Well that depends on how tea breaks you take.)
Then see if anyone is interested in using it.
yeah.. was not my idea. Basically they are being introduced to it slowly, but you can't pitter patter around with stuff like this. Basically all teachers now have it as their home page instead of our intranet, which just had a nice long list of links.
It seems to be generally accepted so far anyways!

Right think first thing is to say the first goverment target is for eportfilo and not a VLE.
Second 2012 (tony is that the right date) is the one for learning platform/mle that includes a VLE.
As for what the difference is.
VLE - a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) refers to a system in which learners and tutors participate in online interactions of various kinds ...
Learning Platform as per becta website: -
http://schools.becta.org.uk/index.ph...n=re&rid=12887
Then we have Managed Learning Enviroment which is learning platform but bringing in all the systems we have in school such as mis and vle.Learning platforms can vary considerably, but each should provide a range of ICT-based functions:
* Content management - enabling teaching staff to create, store and repurpose resources and coursework which can be accessed online
* Curriculum mapping and planning - providing tools and storage to support assessment for learning, personalisation, lesson planning etc.
* Learner engagement and administration - enabling access to pupil information, attendance, timetabling, e-portfolios and management information
* Tools and services - providing communication tools such as email, messaging, discussion forums and blogs.
Anyone filled in thier buzzword bingo card.
Anyone confused yet...

Hi Joanne
For what reason did you get 2 servers with your TALMOS install. We have also gone for TALMOS and are taking baby steps with it up to now. Some staff are onboard but its difficult to preach to most about the benefits of a VLE! No matter what particular setup we choose we would have had the same problems im sure.

The dates are 2008 and 2010.
Full details are available here, but be aware that this is from December 2006. Since then Grant 121 has been rolled into the Harnessing Technology Grant, details available here.
I am sure that there are some TCO papers on Moodle on moodle.org, to give you an idea about doing it in house.

@Andrew
You see we approached the other way we are using portal aka learning platform side then moving on the vle (we are working on the vle over next term with key department and then bigger role out to staff in september).
More important side is to get staff using the portal before we expect them to use the vle.
Russ

We have done something similar, Science, RE and Geography were the initial "trial" departments we selected as these would be the most keen - the other departments aren't as keen or as computer literate as the initial cohort.
Im sure we will get their in the end. We will start putting some our purchased resources on the VLE only and run INSET sessions selling its use to staff in summer term when our Year 11 and Sixth form leave for their exams.

*Puts hand up*
We've had a VLE (i think, you've confused me now russ) now for over 3years and we are yet to use it (well one teacher is trying hard but...). Beyond the technical difficulties of it being unstable, slow, bad support and non-intuative, "we" just cant really work out what it is for
"We" have been sold it as a place to put homework so the kids can access it from home then upload it. Great, but how is that an improvement on the traditional way of getting the kids to write down their homework in their exercise books?
*If* ours was more user friendly i could see the point abit more but as it stands its so inflexible the teacher ends up with a substandard result for more work than if he did it the old fationed way of hand outs or putting files on the kids memorysticks or emailing it.
Add that to the fact that at the beginning of each year you need to all but manually add each kid to each class because it doesnt work properly with SIMS and you end up with a hell of alot of work for no obvious benifits.
