    erro log shows this:

[11-Aug-2014 12:25:01 Europe/London] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function »‚ß^u() in /var/www/moodle/lib/xmldb/xmldb_constants.php on line 32

    That function looks wrong.

Can you tell me what that line actually is?

Just a question, are you 100% sure you have all the files? I'm wondering if it's referencing certain files which have correctly been placed. I had an error very similar not too long ago where I thought I had been uploading all the files but it didn't do it.

    Also,

Backup that file and replace it with this:

    http://fossies.org/linux/moodle/lib/..._constants.php

yes all the files are defo there, I untar'd it from Linux command line, still no joy with the replaced file

I'm now convinced this has something to do with my Ubuntu server, or the way lamp or zend or something similar is setup, seems weird how a server restart gets the site operational again albeit stuck in a loop

I'm not wasting anymore time on this now, going to reinstall my server with windows IIS 8 to host moodle onto - Ubuntu server seems too complex when issues occur

Setting up LAMP is fantastic if you get it working. But I'd agree, this doesn't seem like a Moodle issue. Goodluck with it
