Not to worry; not a single Elgg developer has defected to Mahara, or any other project. Catalyst did make some contributions a couple of years ago, but they have never been part of the Elgg team.

Where this leaves Elgg though, I'm not sure.

It leaves us with one in seven UK institutions either having installed Elgg or considering an install; with what was the first ever campus-wide, institution-owned social network, running at the University of Brighton; with a new version about to be released that addresses long-term issues like full import/export, data portability and mobile access. Packt Publishing just released the excellent book Elgg Social Networking, by Mayank Sharma, if you're interested in finding out more.

Elgg has a very solid business model, but remains free and open source under the GPL v2 (and always will). Beyond education, it runs as the back-end to sites like UnLtdWorld ? the social network and online platform for social entrepreneurs, the social entrepreneurship social network, and we're going to announce some very major collaborations later in the year.
