Is there a free version that runs on a workstation i've been using it on server 2003 for a while and quite like it but i'd like it on my desktop but it won't install on XP and i can't seem to see a desktop version (could be blind though, or ignorant :)).

I have VMware server running on my XP machine.
The onlything that I seem to remember about the installation was that it had to have IIS installed.
I use it to connect to my VMware servers remotely rather than doing a remote desktop to a host server

Ahh you could be right i think it dumped due to a lack of iis and VM Player being installed.

You have to stop the default web site by going to:
Computer Management \ Services and Applications \ Internet Information Services\ Web Sites
While you are there start the VMware Management Interface
I'm running VMServer 1.0.3 on XP Pro at home - I just always ignore the IIS msg and carry on- it always works fine.
An I just installed it on a school workstation yesterday and that worked. :)
