Re: Thin Client Network Setups
Drives and other peripherals work like a dream. Scanners are simply magical!
I have all my clients set to use menium quality sound on the LAN and it seems fine - audio streaming is doable but you get a 3 second delay when you hit the stop button (which Citrix know about).
Apparantly with Presentation Server 3 (which I use) you CAN use Citrix with CAD although I'm a little dubious. You can also install applications into isolation evironments so that they don't disturb each other and have their own resources.
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
I don't suppose you know of any workable demo's of Citrix nowadays. I showed Nathan the Citrix site one about 12 months ago and it was dire - worse than VNC.
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
If you speak to a Citrix reseller they can usually sort you out with a demo.
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
Cheers for the info guys 8) We've been looking into Citrix but it seems expensive for what it does over and above MS Terminal Server. That and we're not sure if it would be viable to move all of our clients accross to it. Don't really want to end up in a situation where half our clients are Citrix based and half are normal PC's.
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
You HAVE to do something like that tho' I think - Citrix will never be a total solution on it's own.
One day - when Linux fulfills all our needs for educational software....
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
This is pretty much the same conclusion I came to. Citrix would only work is it mean't that it saved us time deploying software/OS's and installing devices on local PC's but if we can't move over 75% of our clients onto it then I don't think it'll actually save us time as we'll simply end up installing applications on both terminal servers and windows clients thereby generating more work!
I guess it would save us money on PC refurb costs. The thing is the cost of citrix seems to work out pretty much the same as the cost of our PC refurbishment each year (if not more). I think there might mileage in moving some of our departments accross onto native windows terminal servers though.
I'm sure there's a place for thin clients on our network though!
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
I'm going to be converting a room full a P2-400's with 64mb Ram to Thin Clients running Edubuntu. I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: Thin Client Network Setups
Sure, I don't see a problem with people coming round and having a look/go when its setup.

Sounds like what I will end up with if I get there, but they will be scattered around the school... still, I think you'll get there before me Geoff :x
Re: Thin Client Network Setups
Yeah, couple of weeks tops.
