I don't know what your setup is but this should get you in the right direction.
This is how I setup thinstation a few months ago.
Tech Blog: Thinstation 5.0 and Windows Deployment Services
I used to use this guide posted by @joe90bass to setup ThinStation 2.
Does anyone have anything similar for version 5 please? If i go to this link the latest version is 2.2 - :: ThinStation - a light, full-featured thin client OS ::
The only one i can find involves using an ISO to setup a linux server. Does anyone know how i can do it the old way please?
Yes this is how I did it. I've updated to 5.1 since then, but that should be close enough.
What is your environment? What part is not working? Please give more detail and I'll help as much as i can.
Oh and I see this is your first post, so welcome to the forums.
Hi dana_lehman, thank you for the reply.
At the moment i dont have any solution of thin clients, but i want to use a solution like this with old hardware and without harddisk.
The ideia is to boot using pxe and rdesktop to a windows server 2008.
During the weekend i installed in a virtual enviroment two versions of thinstation: 2.2.2i and thinstation-5.1.1.
- Virtual Machine centos 6.3 for thinstation
- Virtual Machine Windows 2008 R2 for remote desktop
- Virtual Machine to boot using PXE
First i installed version 5.1.1 in centos 6.3 and didnt get sucess, just installed the software needed in this dev enviroment, but i didnt get thinstation to work:
After the installation i did the following
During this build it always ask to install Chrome, and i dont why, but this i strange, because i need just to get thinstation to rdesktop a windows server 2008.
After this try, i start a new instalation of centos 6.3 with thinstation 2.2.2i and in this version thinstation works correctly. I can boot using dhcp, get from my tftp the image and i can rdesktop my windows server 2008.
It seems ok, but i´m getting some issues to connect USB Mass Storage Devices in thin stations. In the build.conf the module of usb storage is ok, but i cannot get usb storage to work.
Do you think the problem is with this version of rdesktop, and by the way, do you think this is the right way to install thinstation?
Thank you again for your reply.
Best Regards from Portugal
Your setup is very different, I am using server 2008 as the pxe server, however you have that part working.
The chrome issue
There is a section in the build.conf for packages, just comment out chrome.
The usb issue
The path may be different for you but I added this to the RDESKTOP_OPTIONS line in the file that defines your connections
Here is an example of my session setupCode:-r disk:usb=/mnt/usbdevice
Code:SESSION_1_TITLE="Classroom Desktop" SESSION_1_TYPE=rdesktop SESSION_1_SCREEN=0 SESSION_1_RDESKTOP_SERVER=10.1.2.3 SESSION_1_RDESKTOP_OPTIONS=" -a 24 -r sound:local -r disk:usb=/mnt/usbdevice -f" SESSION_1_AUTOSTART=Off SESSION_1_ICON=On
What part of 5.1.1 is not working, look through the conf files to make sure everything is set correctly and try building with all modules.
Keep me posted on your progress.
Thank you again for the fast reply.
Well, after your post, i was able to resolve the mount usb disks, it seems ok now (tested in thinstation 2.2.2i)
The chrome issue with thinstation-5.1.1, after comment out i was able to run ./build successfully.
Now with this thinstation-5.1.1, i can boot my virtual machine using pxe, and rdesktop my windows server 2008, but when i try to use old hardware, I can boot using dhcp, get from my tftp the image, but then i get an error saying that is not detecting any video card.
In Machine Types i find out in generic classic_generic that the following module is comment out #module via-agp
I think if i uncomment this and run ./build --allmodules it will work. What do you think?
Thank you again.
If you run allmodules it does not matter what modules are commented out because it will build them all. But to answer your question, yes I would run ./build –allmodules
The other option would be to uncomment the video modules you need and rebuild with just ./build
hey friends .. i want to build my custom os using thinstation on linux ..... so can you all guide me out ..... !!!
a short step by step guide ... !!
unfortunately i didn't put my solution up and running (some other problems on the work). But during my tests, i was able to put thinstation to work with the help dana_lehman..what is your ideia?
