How do I delete a VHD to free up space as I need a merger operation to complete on another virtual machine.

Assuming that you don't need the vhd?
Just delete it, and remove the virtual machine from the management console.
If you need it you'll need to shut the virtual machine down, then export it to another disk before deleting it.
It will not delete

I am getting destination folder access Denied
you need permission to perform this action.
I deleted the VM and it would not get rid of it.
I've seen the same thing if the VHD file was deleted "BEFORE" it was deleted within the HyperV management.
VHD may be gone but a snapshot remains? Could also be causing the problem.
If you can stop the HyperV service you should be able to delete it. (you may have to restart the server itself)
The VM may then come up as corrupt, but will allow you to delete it.
Hopefully this helps
