Disconnect and reconnect on thinstation clients.

As you may tell from previous posts i have been trying thinclients out this week. I finally got a good working set up today using the RIS server to issue the clients. I noticed that after the initial connection and the log on box appears for around 2-3 mins ?it then goes and you just get a black screen with a reconnect icon with a X cursor to reconnect.

    1. Is this normal?
    2. Can it be set up so it never goes away from the log on box at all?
    3. Can thinclients machines be shutdown at night by a script like normal fat windows clients?
    4. Can they be remotely rebooted?

Can anyone help with my questions above?

Erm..? sorry can't help ther maybe Ric knows.

    2. Can it be set up so it never goes away from the log on box at all?

    I should think so.

    3. Can thinclients machines be shutdown at night by a script like normal fat windows clients?

Yes this should prove too difficult depending on your setup.

    4. Can they be remotely rebooted?
As long as they are PXE compatible this shouldn't prove difficult.

Re: Disconnect and reconnect on thinstation clients.

    1) Yes.

    2) I think Thinstation can be set up to reconnect automatically but tbh I wouldn't. Saves bandwidth and all that. If you want a log on box to appear permenantly try 2x ThinClientServer. It's free as long as you only have TS or NX clients.

    3) Again, that depends on the software that you're using. With "proper" thin client hardware, that's generally done through the management interface. With 2X, again thats done through the management interface. With Thinstation I have no idea.

    4) As long as the clients support WOL and PXE, yes.

We have a similar problem.... The pupils can log on to the thinclient workstations but after a few minutes it automatically logs them off again.

Not sure why this is happening, although I have noticed DHCP issues arising in event viewer.

Re: Disconnect and reconnect on thinstation clients.

I set AUTOSTART=Off so that students get a menu - when Citrix disconnects they get sent back to the menu

    3. Can thinclients machines be shutdown at night by a script like normal fat windows clients?
I recall there's something on the thinstation dev list about how to do this

    4. Can they be remotely rebooted?
install ssh or telnet server on the client.

The pupils can log on to the thinclient workstations but after a few minutes it automatically logs them off again.
If the TS isn't told to log off after x amount of inactivity then sounds like more of a network problem to me.

    Lightbulb working with thinstations

i have had my fair share of work with thinstations, for example setting for for college. and i beleive i can help with the problems that your having with the configs.
    assuming that u have the equipment and files that you need;
    • a base unit
    • a unit acting as a server
    • a cat5e cable with rj45 connecters (xover)
    • and copies of; from thinstation.org
    • default
    • thinstation.conf.example (renamed to thinstation.conf.network)
    • initrd
    • pxelinux.0
    • vmlinuz
    • a folder called "pxelinux.cfg" ( this is where the file "default" goes)
    • and a TFTP/DHCP server programs such as "tftp32"
first you will need to set up the machines so that the "server" is ready for tftp transfer.
    Setting up the TFTP32 program
First you will need to install the program after downloading it.
Then when the installation is complete and you have loaded the program, you will see 5 tabs at the top of the screen under the IP address, you will need to click the DHCP tab and then will in the appropriate fields; example
    Starting IP – 192.168.1.1
    Size of pool – 5
    Boot file – /pxeliunx.0
    DNS / wins server IP – 192.168.0.1
    Default IP – 192.168.0.1
    Mask – 255.255.255.0
    domain – WORKGROUP
Then you will have to click on the settings tab at the bottom of the screen, when this box loads up then at the top of the box you will see a box named “base directory” in this you have to point the directory where the thin-station files are stored. E.g. “tftp\tftpboot\”
And then tick the PXE compatibility box and press OK then press the long save button.
then you will be able to boot the thinstation up so long as the cable is connected and the thinstation is pxe enabled.

wait for new post for the "howto's" on configs
