Ok,
Had my nice HP thin client arrive today for testing. When with advice from forum to order linux one. Now only problem i have is how do i get it to connect to the blasted Altiris software!!!!
All i want to do view client details, and deploy options globally, such as automatically connecting to our server via RDP. Am i completely grabbing the wrong end of the stick? Can anybody offer some advice.
Thanks.
Lee
DOn't worry Lee your not on your own with this Thinclient stuff. I am currently experimenting with it at the moment and its not as easy as i thought.

There are some example scripts on the HP website... download these... configure one terminal how you want it... run the script to grab the settings... tun the script to deploy said settings... rename clients.
Give me a prod and you can have my config package but you wil need to change the connection manager setings.
I found it very difficult to wrap my head around the Altiris software when I trialled the HP clients. So much so I gave up with it. At the same time we trialled the IGEL ones which come with a much simpler management console, it may be worth giving those a go. Despite the interface being simpler, you can still set every setting there is to set with it. We ended up going with these for that reason.
They're available at Thinstore
Do you have the url? Everything i've found on the HP website says go to the altiris website. The altiris website only really has instructions for the full console.Originally Posted by Ric_
Do you run the script on the server or client? I cant get the client to even show up in the altiris console, to be able to deploy anything.......

Took a bit of finding but I knew they were there!

Thank ric_.Originally Posted by Ric_
imported the scripts and modified them, how do i run them. No clients are listed in my altiris console

when the client boots, the altiris client on the terminal searches out the server and appears in the list
make sure that all the services are running and try manually creating a new client
tried all that. I'm thinking i have a problem with multicasting. I want to set the actual ip address on the client but cant find anything.....
I hate computers.....

OK... try this...
* Click 'New Computer' icon in the toolbar
* Click 'Add...'
* Add the info
Done that too. Shows a grey (inactive computer)
I think i've discovered the problem. The "Altiris eXpress Server" service seems to start but when you refresh it has stopped again. I think the problem is that i've got 2 network cards on the server. I think it's trying to bind to the wrong one.
Lee,
Can we send you an Axel to test...
I guarranty you will have it fully working, with remote access by management software, inside 60 seconds...!
(The problems you are experiencing are probably due to your hardware being manufactured by one company (HP), the operating system by someone else (Linux), the management software by someone else (Altiris) - none of which products are specifically designed for thin-client technology - so it is a series of compromises - resulting in a very complex and convoluted solution, with the difficulties you have documented above....
Thin clients are supposed to be simple devices making your job easier....
Altiris was a little bit of a pain to get up and working, but once done makes thin client management a breeze.
It's really important to work through the manual. I have altiris running off of the 64 bit TC server and working no probs.

Sorry but that is nonsense. Hp thin clients are superb. Linux is designed to do whatever you want it to, be it thin client or fat client or anywhere in between. The altiris software is designed specifically for thin clients and designed to work with the HP clients. If this wasn't the case, the system wouldn't be sold by HP, thats for sure!
And whilst, yes, thin clients have the aim of simplifying management, it is well known that initial setup is not necessarily an easy task.
The problems they are seeing are more likely down to HP not having the world's best method of organising their support documentation.
