Default Internet Explorer - Thin clients running off TS, no Citrix as of yet.

Good afternoon,

I have a school with a network of 29 TCs running to a terminal server.

from day one it has not worked, I have come in very late to look into it.

I understand there is an issue with running IE over a thin client setup as it uses up so many resources.

how tricky is it to implement Citrix and are there freeware versions?

any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,

Not sure what issues you're having but the majority of our customers use Internet Explorer on our solutions without any problems?

It is not however uncommon for tools such as Securus or of late Policy Central Enterprise to cause problems with IE on shared servers but this is in the minority.

What spec is the TS?

Internet Explorer isn’t the enemy here, Flash and other media plug-ins for IE are usually to blame as they are very resource intensive. Server specifications also have a large impact on the overall end user experience.

What you need to do in my opinion, is manage expectations, thin client devices and terminal server solutions (including Citrix) are currently unable to deliver the media rich online world that everyone now expects and if this is a specific requirement then I’m afraid you may need to look for an alternative and probably fatter solution.

IE will run OK over terminal services but it is resource hungry. Citrix XenApp will improve matters no end... however it will not fix a completely broken set up like you mention.

Really, we need a little more info. In what way does the setup not work? (cannot connect, poor performance, connections dropping randomly....)

What clients are you running? (Windows XP, XPe, Linux, etc.)

Hi guys
thanks for getting back to me, a little more info

the server has 2 quad cores, 1.8Ghz, 32gb RAM, server 2003 64bit, 5 300gb sscsi drives (way too much hehe)

I don't think it is the server, I am leaning towards switching issues now after thinking about it today, I am going to check the speed of the switches.

the TCs are HPs, not sure of the model.

I will have another look again tomorrow.

thanks again guys

Tony
