We will be implementing Citrix during next FY, with initially about 60 client devices in school. We though it would also be making good use of the investment if at night we could allow remote access from home to the service so that students / staff could use some school software via the Citrix Web Client.
However, we have been told that to offer this service, on top of the 60 Citrix concurrent licences and 60 MS Terminal Services licences we would have to buy or subscribe to a MS Terminal Services licence for every user (i.e. 1200 students and 120 staff), even though only up to 60 users could be using the service concurrently.
Can anyone shed some light on this as there doesn't seem to be much info out there (or I can't find it anyway).
Thanks.

Of course, if you buy device CALs for staff laptops, they can use the service from those devices.
An alternative is the External Connector License but that's a grand per server.
Don't forget that every client device also needs to have a license for M$ Office too if that is on your terminal server. So if you are running Office Pro 2003, even the regular student/teacher license doesn't cover it!

Hi,
Microsoft say that you will need a terminal service CAL for every device connecting to the servers within a given period of 56-90 days. You can do it per user but this is expensive and does not take in to consideration two students at the same home using the same computer.
The MS TS management will capture device information so you can see who is using the licenses. We have completed many Citrix installations across the UK and not one of our schools does it "per user" but by device and they have never run out of licenses yet.
Per device is an outright licensing cost (unless your have a MSA).
It would appear that our customers need about 10% more CALS than they do Citrix XenApp licenses.
On another note, are you aware of Citrix XenApp Streaming Applications? For £24 per concurrent connection, home users can not only access applications but can use them off-line too.
I hope this helps.
