Hi
During the next half term i will having VMware infrustructure installed and apparantly i need the VMware plugin for backup exec 12.5.
Do i really need this as i heard from someone that unless i have this module then i will have to write a script or i wont be able to do backups or do VCB
Any help on this would be much appreciated as the module costs £1290 and because i have 2 Vmware esx Servers i will have to have two of them!
Thanks

Have a look at this. This only requires one license per Host and you don't have to worry about running Backup Exec backups to get file level recovery.
VMware Backup for ESX and ESXi
Looks like they are local to you too.

esxpress no longer free
time to look at scripting, including free vmotion scripting.
You can only do the SVMotion which applies to moving the disk image between the attached storage (while the machine is offline). VMotion itself will require infrastructure licenses and a virtualcenter license.
I am currently using Backup Exec 12.5, although still using the guest agent for day to day backups, although I will be exporting VMs to an image once a term to help with disaster recovery.
Edit: It appears that you may well need a license to use the SVMotion anyway. There are still things you can script to stop it on one host and start it on another, but not while the VM is online.

Yeah SVMotion requires VMware VMotion licencing, I fell for this earlier in the week. You can move storage with the VMs into different datastores easily tho (i'm using Vcenter). The drag and drop movement of VMs storages is handy.
Check out 'ghettoQuickMigrate.sh' according to the author: "This script provides administrators running the free version of ESXi on several hosts with the capability to perform Hyper-V-like "quick" migrations of virtual machines residing on shared storage between the hosts." You just need VIMA: w00t.

VMware Backup, ESX/ESXi backup and replication, fast file-level recovery with Veeam Backup
Will test and let you know once air-con is in.
I use a great script by xtravirt.com, free and easy to setup providing you have access to command console
