Sometimes when I vm a old main classroom teacher computer onto a new win7 x64, it lets me off with license key from old XP machine, sometimes it doesn't. Is there an easy legit way of getting hold of single XP licenses in these circumstances?

Maybe those were downgraded keys from 7 to start with, you could try ebay.

Is this what you are after?
Download Windows XP Mode

No, I have to reinstall all the apps again which is what I'm trying to avoid and usually half the discs/license keys are missing.: (

Could you not use Disk2VHD (Disk2vhd) to virtualise the orginal pc and use use the resulting VHD image with Windows XP Mode? Maybe then replacing the windows key with the XP Mode key after it's virtualised?

YesCould you not use Disk2VHD (Disk2vhd) to virtualise the orginal pc
I'm assuming you mean replace the XP Mode VM files with the disk2vhd files?and use use the resulting VHD image with Windows XP Mode?
I'll have a play and see if I can extract its keyMaybe then replacing the windows key with the XP Mode key after it's virtualised?

There are 'ways' of recovering an XP key, leagaly grey but investigatable, you know, if it is a retail copy that the COA has become unreadable on. I think the UBCD for windows tool has some of these.
If the original machine was oem then legally the answer is no.
