KCOM continue to suck
After moving to KCOM and purchasing it's 10Mbit SDSL service they have been unable to deliver that speed. They are doing something strange as the upload speed is on par?
The real pain is the way this deal is setup, we have an agreement with county that locks us in for 3 years (not a contract), if this was anyother company I'd stop paying!
They've done everything from accusing my network of using it too heavily to saying that the problem is something to do with county. The super pain in the butt is I have to relay this through the DCC support. I phone county (as I'm not supposed to talk to kcom direct) they then get kcom to talk to me (anyway!) KCOM blame everyone else and even tried to tell me that the line speed is normal! I'm supposed to pay £6k for this rubbish for 3 years!
I would never use KCOM if I had the choice but due to having sites in Hull I have no choice, its painful and causes me so many issues.
to get a true speed test I'd recommend disconnecting everything except for a laptop from your Cisco router to ensure nothing else is using any of the bandwidth and then re-test.
Also try a couple of speedtest.net servers as sometimes they can be overloaded.
Also find if there is a local on-network downloadable file you can test against to identify whether it is a network bottleneck or when getting out to the internet. I would also not just rely on speedtest.net for speeds ... it can be seriously out at times.
I tried plugging in just my laptop into the cisco router (as I may have malware or an unruly client) but the result was similar 60% down 95% up. I requested that I transfer a file to something just the other end of the link but they stated there was no file server or anything but routers in there. There is a Dorset County Speed test page but it was unavailable to me.
Anyhow KCOM left a message with my technician today and stated the'd found a fault in one of their lines and would fix it tonight.
I bet they're just going to try and retrain the lines again this will be the 3rd time. Too lazy to test anything they'll just keep trying the same 2 fixes until I get fed up and leave them alone.
My SWMBO works for a large public sector organisation who have a voip system supplied and serviced by KCom, and I am given to understand that the engineer was lucky to leave with his life after the problems they have had with the voip service... nuff said.
Well blow me...
I guess I'll have to say KCOM finally got it!
This fills me with fear. Put in a call to Dorset IT as my download speed is hovering at 4mb.
They are contacting KCOM

I am surprised secondary schools aren't saturating their 10mb lines anyway, we regularly go way over that.
We find most secondary schools average about 46Mbit during the daytime when on 100Mbit lines. Some larger ones peak about 80Mbit.

I've just found out that my primary has a 4mbps connection!!
DorsetCC changed broadband supplier and I was only asked whether I thought we should change. I wasnt aware of the different speeds and delivery systems available
One school went with copper - yeah, so futureproof at 8mbps
and the primary went with what he already had - 4mbps
It beggars belief that the LA IT dept didnt point out what the usage is likely to be and what he should be looking at
