Automate pinging on all devices

Hello fellow geeks,

I am trying to look for a script which will automatically allow me to ping all the access points in one go and generate reported problems.

I think there is a piece of software called ping monitor which allows you to do this but its not free. Has anyone got a script to ping my problems :?

You could try using something like lanspy from lantricks.com to find all available machines and what services that are on the remote devices.

If you want to do more with access points then you need to look at SNMP tools or even the commercial offerings from the hardware manufacturers.

There is a section of this http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...ario1-vbs.mspx vbs code from microsoft that checks to see if a host is alive using a ping.

There is also a section to check machines are alive via ping in the fastpush installation script for vnc and also there is a section of http://www.myitforum.com/articles/11/view.asp?id=6356 that you could use.

You might want to look at real network monitoring solutions rather than simply pinging things. I use Nagios and Cacti here for example.

Thanks for the LanSpy Link Grumble Dook, added in the scope of the IP addresses and disabled all apart from the ping and the job is done ping all AP in a matter of seconds to know that they're up and running

For something simple you can get Yahoo Widgets for your desktop to do it. Sitewatcher2 will support upto 5 hosts to ping, but they're only javascript inside and I'm sure could be hacked about to show more in 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can create a copy of the widget with a different name and use it to monitor a further 5.

That screenshot shows it in "maximized" view; in minimized view you just see 4 small green (or red!) LEDs. (They can be always-on-top or normal)

I notice there's a newer version with more features (Sitewatcher 3) but I haven't tried it:

You could also have a look at Morten's HostAlive which is free and doesn't have a limit on the number of monitored hosts...
