Storage Policy
Hi, I'm not sure if anyones asked this before, but what storage space does anyone generally allow their Staff and students (using quotas or similar)
We tend to allow 120Mb -500Mb per student (depending on year and individual needs) and a 1gb for Staff (until they run out and ask for more!)
Mailboxes are 15-50 Mb for students and 100Mb for Staff (again, until they run out!)
Removing old year groups helps, but the storage demand goes up quickly every year

At the moment on our network;
Staff home folder - 1GB each initially, although a lot have been extended beyond this. Can never see why staff need so much storage!
Student home folders - Varys depending on yeargroup. the highest is 1GB for year 11 and 6th form who are doing the DIDA course. Year 7 start at 150MB.
E-Mail - No restrictions at the moment, and we have plenty of space on our mail server at present, so no plans to crack down yet!
Our storage is used at roughly 1GB over all the servers per working day, so lucky we have plenty of spare capacity at the moment!
Mike.

Re: Storage Policy
I'm a stingy git when it comes to disk quotas. Students have 50Mb initially, rising to 100Mb if necessary. Staff have 250Mb initially, rising to 500Mb or 1Gb if necessary.
Certain members of staff have cried to the Senior Management team and have had quotas raised to stupid levels or removed.

9-11, 100Mb, 12-13 200Mb. Increased if the students folder is mostly work. Staff have no limit, at least for a couple more weeks.

I work in a primary school. Children have 30-50MB, Staff have 150MB. I have never given anyone more space or any exception to this rule. I have told staff who have asked for more space that there isnt room on the backup tape/server. I tell them to clear out stuff they dont need or to archive their files to flash memory stick or their home computer. They soon get the message.

Year 9s get 10MB here, I think the most students are given is 150MB (unless they really need it!)

I don't have quotas as such. I monitor user folders to watch for kids who are just taking the p***. But as space isn't a problem at the moment, I don't really worry too much about it.
How can you justify quotas on staff? Having looked at one of our teachers folders it is mostly Smart notebook stuff and powerpoints. They'd fill 150NMb with 4 files...

Only have Quotas on Email atm. Zimbra automagically looks after it.
Users home areas are not monitored individually. We monitor the servers as a whole and if the percentage of free disk space hits 25% we get a warning in Nagios. It's then a simple case of investigating where the disk space has gone with WinDirStat and shouting at the relevant user.

The kids have 100mb each, which is a soft limit - it just flags them as over 100mb, nothing more. In reality the rule is "don't take the piss" - if you need the space, it's there for you. Most kids never go over 100mb, it tends to be gcse and a-level art students who need more space.
Staff don't have a limit per se (see "don't take the piss"), but I keep an eye on who's using what and ask them to tidy occasionally.

K-9 = 50MB
10-13 = 75MB with more being given if needed
Staff = 200MB, more granted if needed, Department Heads / other high volume users get 500MB.

Currrently staff are on 250MB, unless a good reason is given. Students vary according to year group, ranging from 40MB up to 100MB.

Sorry to bring up an old topic,
What do you guys about Art students and photography students, which are currently taking up over 1GB of space, we currently dont have quotas on our system but i want to implement them, i was thinking of giving 1GB to students but what about these students over 1GB?
Cheers

1GB?! Cough, splutter. Sorry.
Have a quick look in the areas for the +1GB users and see how much of it is school-related, then make your call based on how much space they actually need (which is often wildly different to how much they're actually using!)
