    i used to be 230 to 1

    now i am 110 to 1, but i don't notice the difference as workstations are xp and require more work.

    That's strange. Surely with XP the PCs would be more secure and stable so should require less work. When we had RM2.4 / win98 the PC's crashed all the time and the pupils were able to tinker with all of the settings. XP's proved much more reliable.

    There's no way we could cope with our current ratio (bout 150:1) if we were running Windows '95/'98 8O

    4 of us, 650 computers, 162:1

    For 3 months there were just 3 of us, that was pretty stressfull.

    Re: computer:tech ratio

    We have :
    * 13 Linux servers
    * 120 thin clients
    * 15 Linux boxes
    * 2 M$ servers
    * 50ish XP desktops
    * 35 XP laptops
    * 3 dual boot laptops
    * 15 Apple MACs
    * 5 Mac ibooks

    So thats 258 to 1.5.
    A better question is "What boxes take the most of my time?"
    It's 6 of the XP desktops and about 15 of the XP laptops. I reckon we spend something like 6 working days of the year on each these 21 machines. This makes the TCO of these very high. We're in a no-win situation; if we lock them down so the users can't fiddle, they complain that they can't install any software, and when it goes wrong, ICT have to clean up th mess. One particular laptop seems to always be with us for reloading - ideally it should be consigned to the graveyard, but there is no money available for a replacement.

    For me it is 173:1. It is starting to get a bit heavy to manage, but we are looking at moving over to thin clients at some point soon for part of the network so the maintenance will drop dramatically.

    Generally, I would say my workload was high to very high but I'm not complaining too much as that is what I'm here for.

    Re: computer:tech ratio

    Mine isn't bad at all, but my network manager has quite a lot over seven (nine including the two I work for) primary schools.

    Not including my two schools (I won't include them because I do most of the work for those) he has (these are estimates from when I shadowed him for a month):

    - 252 Windows Desktops (a large mixture of windows 98, 2000 and XP)
    - 84 Windows Teacher laptops (all windows XP)
    - 21 servers (mixture of windows 2000/2003 and linux, mainly windows)
    - 16 MACs in a wireless laptop trolley
    - Projector and whiteboard in nearly every classroom of nearly every school

    He spends half a day at each school and he does all of the above purely by himself. It scares me how busy he is.

    Re: computer:tech ratio

    225:1

    we have:
    456 machines incl teacher laptops, pcs, servers etc
    32 iwb soon to be increased by another 25
    15 waps that are forever needing our attn (i hate wireless)
    80 teachers who need babysitting

    we are also charged with taking the it forward here. so we are constantly looking at new technologies that would add value to the school. we are in the middle of:

    installing an isa 2006 server
    exchange 2003/2007 - i haven't quite decided yet
    citrix...and all the TCs that go with it
    trying to get qca to work but that's for another forum
    i may have forgotten stuff as i sometimes glaze over when i think about the enormity of the task here

    In my current school we are about 200:1 at the moment, with more computers coming.

    We cope very well thou, as generally the technology is very reliable and although we have a lot of computers, we are a relatively small school with only 80 staff and 400 students at the moment.

    We are about 1,000:1 (as far as computers go - then you have to add in printers, projectors, smartboards, document cameras, etc). Then again, we are a US district. Seems like you guys get wayyy better funding than we do.

    We currently have two IT staff.

    95:1 here (two full time techs) not to bad to manage now that we are moving to a thin client setup.

    The technician at my last place is now on his own with roughly 600 desktops (increased since I left - dunno exact numbers), and I know for a fact that they're not recruiting, just investing in more systems and gear to fill his spare time!
