Including servers, laptops and everything 73:1 used to be about 50:1

I think I need to have a chat with you about how the heck you manage that...

I've just picked up another school with a potential 3rd in the wings... 360 is not a target I aspire to..

Whilst it's nice to quantify things, the numbers don't mean much without context.

350:1, although I do have an AVA technician who also deals with the printer consumables plus keyboard/mice maintenance.

“Those tasks that take up all our time”

I never found those to be to bad. A while back RM sold us some nice mice that need to be unscrewed to get the ball out while all the new computers are ball less mice. It does mean cleaning the mouse takes an extra minuet and you need a screwdriver but that’s more then made up by the time saved fixing ball less mice. All the mice and keyboards are fixed to the tables as well.

Most of my time is taking up by problems between the keyboard and chair and that 1 wireless box that keeps breaking at the most inconvenient time possible.

    Re: computer:tech ratio

I have >340 machines all on one site and I'm the only person who even knows how to turn them on. No PFYs (and the sort of person you'd get for minimum wage would not be the sort of person I'd want working with me) and the IT Teachers can only use Word. So I have lots of stress. 70 computers in total! Heaven

    Re: computer:tech ratio

    I've got the following
    388 PCs and Macs
    132 laptops
    6 Servers
    30 IP Phones
    60 Projectors
and we are just about to add an new IP CCTV system!

It is pretty much all down to me, I have a Tues-Thurs modern apprentice and a part-term lady who manages our independent learning centre (38 PCs) and she deals with all the consumables.

I wanted to get 2 full-time technicians but the management said that would be to expensive and they would be more likely to buy into a managed service.

I was talking to a networking consultant who made me realise that schools have probably larger networks than most big companies! He has 150 PCs in his company that are managed by a team of 5 technicians.

    Re: computer:tech ratio

The difference is that if a business is without IT for even a few minutes it affects profit whilst in schools it only affects learning ...

    Damn ... being cynical again.
