We block Google images (along with many other image sites).

They just don't seem to filter inappropriate images quite as well as needed in schools.

I agree with siuko the filtering is very hit and miss.

If you want to see for yourself select strict filtering from within the SafeSearch Filtering options. Then search for "adriana sage" even with strict safe search the images on page three of the search should not be seen within a school environment.

We found this out during the summer as during the testing of our new web filter.

It seems Google thinks hardcore images are ok to be seen even with safe search enabled it does happen with a lot of other image searches too.

A lot of our customers find that safesearch + deep url filtering makes things more effective. This also blocks the individual images.

We're also going to be improving "banned search terms" soon - should be fun

"new mobile phone" via images.google.com always used to come up with a topless oriental girl, but this has been pushed to page 2 now.

We don't block google images, but the LA does block google URLs without safesearch=on in them.

Hm, that's an interesting one - poby.free.fr (source of mobile phone/porn image) is now blocked, so that thumbnail won't be returned by Smoothie if you have deep URL filtering on. TBH, I don't remember if this is the default setting - i don't think it is - go to "per group settings" on the guardian menu, and enable "Perform a deep URL analysis on sites" - it is a *minor* performance hit, but it is worth it for the positives in GIS.
