Well, I dont play games but I did have to do CAD. Hence my mid-range GFX card.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm beginning to agree with 'mrforgetful' about the cost and being out of date. Probably too old to be playing games now anyway!Originally Posted by mrforgetful

Cheers

I recomend CCL Computers up in Bradford. They built systems to your spec, have there own recomended ones for those that cannot be bothered chosing the bits as well as HPs, Acers and all the bits to build your own. Very good firm and excellent support, all from Bradford not India. The CCL Forum is also a very good place to go and chat about new PC ideas etc, you can pass them between other members and you can enjoy discussing ideas and see what people have had problems with etc.
www.cclonline.com is the address you need.

Hp's are the way forward. IMHO![]()
I've used them for over 10 years, never had any trouble and always the cheapest around.Originally Posted by john

When it comes to cost, it used to be that the difference between budget, midrange and top-end was dramatic, but it's not much anymore, there's always a choice that's half the price and only slightly slower, that's the one to go for.
I'd have to say I'd agree on the Dell front (no experience of Acer/HP to comment). Dells now tend to have proprietary motherboard and powersupplies which make it much more difficult to fix or upgrade than any evil genius could dream up.Originally Posted by Adam
ie: Dell PSU's have a standard ATX connector that is NOT wired up that way so you can't replace it without getting a Dell replacement.
As we found out when some little scrote flicked the 230/110v switch on 6 dells when they were turned....Originally Posted by contink
I recommend everyone superglues these switches in the 230v position before your little darlings figure it out...

I'm just waiting for the day Tesco start selling cars, motorbikes and caravans. It can't be long now.

Having been short of time to build a boxes for applications at school, I've bought several PCs from BigPockets in recent months, both for personal and work, all of which have been well built and worked straight out of the box.
Their high end stuff is a bit pricey, but the lower spec stuff is a pretty good bargain.
Having had a Dell machine on evaluation alongside a Viglen, an HP, a BigPockets tower and a local pc shop one, i would never *ever* buy a Dell. The bloody thing started squeaking and squealing at me every time it was booted it up after i took the case off to see what was inside and was performing well below what it should have been doing for the supposed spec it was. There were also far too many specialised parts inside for my liking.
The only slight saving grace it had was not being as crap as the one built by a local company whom a worrying number of schools recommend.
There was little to choose between the HP and Viglen boxes, both being similar in price and performance.
