- Yes. Yes I am. that is all.
- Everyone who has entered the competition by midnight on Thursday 29th August will be in with a shot at winning the star prize. Any winners of daily prizes whose names have been temporarily removed will be put back in for the star prize draw.
- We use a laser to "etch" away the layer of black anodisation in the aluminium panel of certain products, revealing the bare aluminium underneath. The laser travels along controlled paths that we define and marks the panel one fine line at a time. In order to get the best results, there are certain limitations to the artwork we can produce using this process. Very small details are best avoided as the etching line has a certain thickness which limits the detail visible, and on a brushed aluminium surface like this, the line "wobbles" a little bit as it passes over the brushing grooves, also limiting the amount of detail visible. It is also best to avoid large areas of "white", as the laser leaves a faint trail which becomes more and more apparent when lots of lines are etched next to each other to create the blocks of white. This artefact is more noticeable in sharp corners where the path of the laser suddenly turns. We can etch the whole side of the panel for you, but need to leave a 2mm gap from the edge to avoid damage to the sides of the panel or PC. Large artworks need to be done as line drawings, to avoid the artefacts that become visible in large blocks of white. The panel is always going to be predominantly black basically. Having seen many Broadleaf front panels with custom branding, they always look great even with some faint artefacts, which I think just show the genuine marking process in the same way that stitches show the process in embroidery.
Here's an example of a Nano Sketch panel we etched recently. The blocks of white in the butterfly wings are at the upper limit for size (look in close-up and you can see the line artefacts) and the outline portions of the butterfly show the fine line approach:

Who ever wins can submit the artwork they want and before etching we'll convert it into a version appropriate for our process and show them a mockup prior to firing the laser.
Al, laser etching can be done on laptops btw (As per our convo the other week), just needs the laser to be on a lower setting than etching metal
We're well past 15, but the numbers are still fairly modest (could be down to the summer holidays) so anyone who thinks it's not worth entering by now, think again - it really is!
