Just wondering why you don't want licences - are you running linux or do you own retail copies of windows? If you have a school agreement, I think you still need to have OEM licences on the hardware.
Sorry if you know what you're doing here and ignore me if this is still correct, though I don't think we have ever ordered hardware without some type of licence!

We are replacing computers we already have on our network and for the others we will be buying a volume licence agreement. We still have a cupboard wih over 100 win 98 licences, which i believe, (although i maybe wrong!)means we can purcahase a volume licence agreement licence and be covered.

its pretty flexible, as always want as much as possible for very little... lol
at least 2 gig of ram for both
the workstations need sata hdd but suppose thats standard now, size of hdd is at least 80gb
workstations would preferably have separate graphics cards.

My understanding of XP licencing is if the hardware is replaced or substantially altered from the PC that the original licence was attached to, a new XP licence is required. Am I misguided in this?

The volume licence is "upgrade" only. You have to have a Windows licence with the PC to start with.
This can be a retail copy out of the shop or an OEM.
If your old PC's have an OEM Windows 98 licence it lives and dies with that PC, and cannot be transfered to your new ones and then upgraded. I presume thats what you mean by 100 copys of 98 in a cupboard

I thought it sounded a bit odd
Best be safe, afterall! I guess if you had bought 100 copies of Win98 retail all those years ago and never used them, then that may have been ok (though even that I am not sure of), but certainly not if they came with OEM hardware!

10th July 2009, 02:58 PM #13 Just got 2 x Dell R710 which are built for virtual hosting, it worked out a lot cheaper as we only need 2 servers instead of 3 and performance over 2950 is alot better.

Blunt but honest question- if we quote do we stand any chance of getting the deal given your comments or are you just looking for 3 quotes in order to proceed? Not wishing to seem abrupt but just wanted to manage expectations at this end.
Cheers

Simon has been my main supplier and his prices always good, but obviously with such a big quote it comes down to price and then if its close the good service we have received will be a factor.
