Looking for a good NAS box recomendation and quote please. Looking for 1TB usable within a RAID1 array.
It doesnt have to integrate with AD as it will only be used for backing up data but would need to be secure enough so that if it got stolen someone would'nt just be able to plug it into a PC and get all the data off.
Rackmount or free standing, Gigabit ethernet also please

7th May 2009, 02:00 PM #2 I whole heartedly recommend the Netgear ReadyNAS 1100 range. Great hardware, excellent o/s, loads of plugins that you can use and community support is pretty good. I've recovered files very easily from them just via the web frontend, or you can get filthy and use ssh if you want.

Easy to do, convert or buy a computer with min 2 sata ports, add 2 1tb drives and install openfiler or freenas.

7th May 2009, 02:51 PM #8 We have this Acer EasyStore 1.2TB (2 x 640GB) at a good price, supports RAID 0,1,5 - Just 229.97
If you're using 1TB in the RAID1, we also sell with 4x 500GB drives as standard for just £358.88
Hope this helps.

I have some low profile workstations that I use as NAS, I think they only equate to about 3u. Ours are nicely sat on top on a rackmount server (so although they aren't rackmount, the brackets from the server below can take the weight).
A normal workstation would only be about 5u on its side wouldn't it?

The cab already has a switch and patch panel in it so dont think a normal workstation would fit.
I do have a 'spare' small workstation that would fit but i wouldnt be able to get 2 sata drives in it
EDIT: I may be able to squeeze 2 small drives into this small workstation, just need to find some 500GB drives that are only 20mm thick :S

Just for info this is the Aspire Easy Store with Wireless connection, designed for home use, although it would be fine for school use.
The Altos Easy store also 1Tb uses 5x250Gb drives and is better built and offers more redundancy. They are end of life but I still have one which I could offer for £199.99
