Are they? We've ordered stuff from them showing as in stock only to then find we've got to wait whilst they order it in from the manufacturer....

That'll be where I saw them. Good find. The fact that I paid £85 per unit last year as well makes me chuckle!

Decent little server. More than capable in small primaries as the Admin server.

Would this HP server do for a moderate-end home server?

Probably a silly question as it's specs are better than what I have currently but my current server (a 'build it yourself' special) - seems to be behaving rather oddly.

(You power it up and it just sits there, doesn't even POST or beep anything - unplug a few wires, plug them back in... up it comes... it's around 4-5 years old now - Pentium 4 - 4GB RAM)

Anyway, the reason I ask is because if I have to replace any parts of my existing box (with a few exceptions) it will cost me a small fortune as the parts in it are so old and out of date.

It has 4x SATA hard drives, all of these are starting to 'creak' a little due to the massive amount of use it's been put through over the years, but replacing 4 HDs with 250GB capacity is around £40-£50 per drive from what I've seen (It's home, so I have to pay VAT) - so buying a new server (like this HP) only works out slightly more expensive but gives alot more bang for your buck... (sorry, I mean pound).

    Any ideas?

(If anyone has any ideas or questions about my server HW issues - drop me a PM if you can, I'd appreciate any help, ideas or advice given in regards to it)

    Peace.

    Az

Great servers these. Got some from Simon at the old price with extra 3GB RAM and 1TB of mirrored storage for not alot of pennies.

    Cheers Bud,

lol never said we are the cheapest but buying from other suppliers doesnt support Edugeek as we are a value added sponsor of the site.

Me too. If it's any consolation if I could afford to, I'd buy one as I need one for a home project but other things like food wives and daughters have to come first.

FWIW, everything has had a price hike - remember we buy this stuff in dollars (most of it is ultimately sourced from countries whose currency is pegged 1:1 to USD). Now that pre-bought stocks are depleted, we are seeing the effects of our once proud currency being worth somewhat less than milk bottle tops.

Just look here: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ and you will see (click on any of the camera kit for price graphs) that both Nikon and Canon mysteriously got more expensive recently.

    Ooh, feels good doesn't it

NB. Your smoothwall software is 99% "bought" in the UK by paying UK workers - only our shiny black UTMs and anti-spam subs come from foreign climes, and we are currently absorbing those costs... so our prices are falling by comparison to a global market.

They will make good clients for the office or home. Presuming they can take XP or Vista.

Sorry but I don't agree with that, we have a duty to procure best value for money not always cheapest price.
