having a quick look at a quick crossword this morning, and I'm stuck for an answer, 4 letters, the clue is GEEK. So far the letters I've got are
N _ R _ .
I have to admit I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

That would be NERD
Hmmm.... don't think it is ;) This has been discussed at great depth already... somewhere (can't find where).

Slashdot I think have two discussions on the Geek vs. Nerd issue.
Geek (n) - A nerd with social skills.
Originally discussed in conversation in a pub many years ago (That also happened to server a fruit drink called a 'Looza')... then used as a sig by some of the discussers, including a few who were on OU courses. This has since been picked up by various people and more recently seen here as lindylou's sig.
And once this description makes it into the OED I can say I have been part of living etymology :-D
