Try loading them in OpenOffice.org. That usually fixes them for me.

For Word :
Go to file --> save as webpage and then save it literally as a webpage / html file.
Look here :
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm
Not sure about excel ( Im sure a google search ) or loading it into open office may help
Just a quick post but will have a better look later on

Ontrack easy recovery pro does what it says on the tin: don't think it is that expensive can't remember but it does what i want it to do

6th June 2008, 01:52 PM #5 Word has it's own recovery/repair. File->Open and next to the "Open" button there's a drop-down button - change to "Open and Repair". Failing that, change "open as file type" to "Recover Text From Any File" (or something like that). Not always successful, so I would also use OpenOffice.org.
