    xx.xls locked for editing

    Some spreadsheets have been created for the Teachers to input some target tracking information. There is one for every class.

    I was told this morning that one of the files wont open with the message "2F.xls locked for editing".
    When i tried to open the other year 2 spreadsheets i got the same error. Unfortunately the name it gives me makes no sense as it was one that was set previously by someone else and doesn't make it easy for me to trace which pc, if any, has it open.

    Is there a way round this? Can i free the "locked" files? I find it wierd that the one the teacher tried to open for her class was locked because surely it would only be here editing it.....

    Thanks

    Server 2003
    Windows XP

    Tried running something like unlocker <http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/> over them?

    or restarting the server their stored on should free them

    right-click 'My Computer' on the server and choose 'manage' from the context menu. Or add a 'Shared Folders' Snap-in to your MMC and connect it to your server.

    Either way, under 'Shared Folders' you should havee 'Shares','Sessions', and 'Open Files'. Check if the offending file is listed in 'Open Files'. If it is it will tell you which user has it open. If get them to close the file or, failing that, just delete the file from this list.

    @Little-Miss:
    Go to the open files on the server and close the links to these files.
    On the Server right click My Computer>choose manage and in the window on the left look for open files. (Just in case you didn't understand my way of putting things)

    Apologies if you already know how to access these open files.
