Default Error 1406: Setup cannot write the value to the registry key

OK this is now seriously annoying me now

I am getting sporadic reports of people getting the following error when they try to open Office 2007 apps (Word, Excel are the 2 main ones)

Quote:
Error 1406: Setup cannot write the value to the registry key <<blah blah>>
It refers to various registry keys and files.. and options are Abort/Retry/Ignore

If I Retry - the error keeps appearing
If I Ignore Setup fails
Abort is the only option

There is reference to not having the right permissions - even if logged on as a Domain or Local Admin!!

I have tried M$'s KB article here - You receive an error message when you install an Office program or open an Office program or document to no avail

The ONLY solution has been to restore the PC to a previous date - in this case the end of the term in July...

Im starting to wonder if there is an update thats screwing it up but there is no reference to such an issue..

Anyone else got the issue or know the cause and/or easier solution?

Ok found the problem - Its McAfee VirusScan 8.5i's Access Protection - soon as its disabled the errors disappear and all is well!
