    Electronic School Reports

    Hi All,

We are looking at sending out an electronic version of the school reports via e-mail, but we obviously would like to prevent editing of them by parents/pupils etc. Has anyone else done something similar and what's the best way to do it?

    Cheers
    Steve

Check this isn't a function available in your MIS. Most will allow printing and storage as PDF, which can be locked, and if the parental e-mail is included in the student data, then it becomes automatic. I know iSAMS, WCBS, SIMS and a couple of the other larger players can all do it.

Insight from TASC Software allows you to have the SIMS reports as part of the data parents can see when they login.

We produce our school reports via the Profiles module of SIMS and issue to parents via the Learning Gateway as .pdf's

    We use Go4Schools too.

I take the view that e-mailing reports is "dangerous" from a data security POV and the systems mentioned here that allow parents to access the reports via a secure web-based tool are a much safer choice. I'd be interested to see if others agree with my paranoia!

We were discussing this here just yesterday - yes, emailing reports home is insecure, but possibly no less secure than posting a document (mis-delivered post seems to be something of a problem these days) or sending it home with a child (childen being very capable of reading/losing/eating stuff on the way home). We're aiming to have reports accessed by a web-based tool too, with each parent having a separate login. I'm curently trying to extract pupil reports from our VLE (School Manager). Theorectically, it already has PDF versions of each school report stored, however those reports sometimes seem to vary in the font that they use and the school's logo shows image compressions artifacts around the edges, so I figured if I can get the raw reports text out of the system I might re-do the PDFs using a Python library:

    https://pypi.python.org/pypi/reportlab/3.1.8
