Word seems to be saving/coverting .doc files to macro-enabled templates .dotm?

Strange one, this. We're using Office 2010 which has a number of quirks, this being one of them...

We're forcing Word to save as Word 1997-2003 .doc files to solve a printing issue we had, so this may or may not be related, but Word seems to be saving, or converting after the fact, documents as .dotm template files?

Obviously all the student's work is stripped out of the document at the same time, very frustrating.

Anyone seen anything similar? Could offer an opinion?

    Ta,
    Ben
