    Problems embedding Youtube clips into Powerpoint

    Hi,

    I have a member of staff that has been using the Powerpoint 2010 feature of embedding web video (youtube in this instance) directly into Powerpoint. I'm told until recently this worked fine, but now when you try and play the embedded clip a popup appears from Windows Media Player that says "To play the selected item, you must install a later version of Adobe Flash Player".

    What I've tried (all with same Youtube clip);
    - You use the Youtube embed code with Powerpoint, so I saved that code locally and opened it in a browser to test the embed code, and that worked fine
    - In Media Player I went to Open URL and pasted the Youtube URL and it worked.
    - In Powerpoint, using "Link to a video file on a web site", copy the same embed code in and it just adds a black box to powerpoint, which gives the error above when you try and play it.

    So given that the embed code is fine, and Media Player can play the Youtube flash fine... I'm at a loss as to the solution. We're running Windows 7 x86, latest Adobe Flash Player.

    Any tips would be gratefully received.

    Quite possibly because the embed code used by YouTube has changed, this might help: Embed a YouTube video in PowerPoint 2010 - Spiceworks

    The same issue was reported by some of our staff. I downloaded and installed this for those complaining before Christmas:

    Link: Windows 7 Codecs Pack for Windows Media Player WMP12 and Media Center

    They haven't complained since so I am guessing it's fixed? Worth a go for you?

    We are using the 'old embed code' for Youtube already - although still seems possible the embed code is at fault. Anyone got any embed code I could test?

    Thanks for this - but I'd rather not install codec packs unless necessary. It also should, and did work without.

    Okay I've figured something out. Following along the lines of the Youtube embed code must have changed, this website allows you to generate the old embed code.

    If I use that website and select 'v1 player' then the embed code works within Powerpoint!

    So the 'old embed code' option in Youtube, isn't the same as this.

    Hi Thanks

    But done what you have said as a work around and get.

    PowerPoint cannot insert a video from this embed code. Verify that the embed code is correct, and try again

    I changed nothing but the player version. Here's is a comparson of the working and non-working embed code I'm testing.

    Youtube - old embed code (doesn't work)
    Code:
    <object width="560" height="315">
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQIKfRrJack?hl=en_GB&amp;version=3"></param>
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
    <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQIKfRrJack?hl=en_GB&amp;version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>
    </object>
    Tools4noobs Generator (works)
    Code:
    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" style="width:450px; height:366px;" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQIKfRrJack?color2=FBE9EC">
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gQIKfRrJack?color2=FBE9EC" />
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />
    <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
    </object>

    I got the code that Tricky posted to work.
    If you didn't, as a bit of a work around that might prove useful, it looks like the PowerPoint embed feature doesn't like iFrames, which is why the new code doesn't work. However there is a free plugin that allows any webpage including iFrames to be shown live...
    LiveWeb - insert and update web pages real-time in PowerPoint

    Confusingly Powerpoint2010 doesn't have 'tools', so its 'file'->'options'-> 'manage...PowerPoint add-ins'->'go'-> 'add new...'-> browse to un-zipped download.
    Staff shouldn't need admin rights to add this.

    Once added, Liveweb should be added to the Insert ribbon. The upside of this method is that it should work if YouTube works, you can then use the YouTube URL codes to alter the video
    eg.10 Youtube URL Tricks You Should Know About
    edit: The downside is it's the whole page, not just the video although there may be a way of changing this with a bit of playing.

    Some may argue that there is little advantage over a simple link to open an external browser window, however it can be neater to stay within Powerpoint.

    I found out how to do it...get the NEW embed code from YouTube
    eg.<iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-QSUUecYxmE?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
    Delete the tags so your left with this...
    ww.youtube.com/embed/-QSUUecYxmE?rel=0&allowfullscreen
    Note the added '&'
    Now use this for the liveweb plugin...
    (I deleted a 'w' only to stop the forum turning it into a link and hiding some of the code)

    ...or scrap all that and use this plugin
    YouTube Video Add-in
    which is a lot easier and also works.
