Fog Imaging with Optiplex 740's

Hiya, we're suffering problems imaging Dell Optiplex 740's and have read that we need the Peter Sykes kernel in order to make things 'magically work'. We're on the latest version of fog and the most recent version of ubuntu but we have no idea how to go about compiling/installing fog kernels.

The FOG Kernel Updates section on the management GUI sits there forever (it's likely that it is dying on our proxy if it is trying to access the Internet, in whichcase we need to know how to configure whatever it is using in order to work via the proxy).

So we don't know how to get the fog kernel section of the management GUI working, and we don't know how to manually compile/install either.

Ultimately, we just want to be able to successfully inventory and upload/deploy images to these machines.

I had the same problem. The kernel updater does not work behind a proxy.

Download the kernel you need and place it in the fog/kernel folder. Then update the host kernel information with the path and file name in the information for your host. You will need to do this will all of the effected hosts.

Unfortuanately, this didn't work for us.

It didn't change the kernel when we put Host Kernel in the host section on the fog menu. What IS possible for us though is to change the /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg menu and throw in a new entry that reads:

This sorta does the trick (by the fact it seems to change the linux kernel on pxe boot if we select that menu option from the pxe boot menu, but we get a kernel panic if we do it like this.

Any ideas on what we can do to either get the former working, or the latter?

I have been having issues with getting fog to boot correctly on a Gigabyte MA74GM-S2H motherboard and tried various other kernels to see if they helped.

They would boot further than the newest kernel would - but would then still not function correctly for imaging. (I still havent solved this problem)

But I found the easiest way to try new kernels was to download them - copy them to /tftboot/fog/kernel and rename the bzImage to bzImageOLD and rename the newly downloaded kernal to bzImage so the standard boot uses the newer kernel.

Certain of the kernels I also got kernel panics on so it might just be the kernel you are using. Try another :D
