I'm rebuilding a laptop for a member of staff as a Vanilla machine (not on the domain). We have some licenses for Ghost here and am planning on taking an image when I have got it running as I want.
The thing that I want to do (and not sure if it is possible) is create a DVD with the image, that auto boots to ghost and restores the image from the DVD to the HDD?
Is this possible? I've seen in on Toshiba recovery disks but didn't know if I could create on with my own image?
I know its possible through DOS, using bat files and Menuitem commands, but its a long time since i have used ghost so dont know if there is a better way.
Look at Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. You can add startup commands to it; it would be easy to make that process run Ghost (I've never done it to restore an image from the disc but I've done it to boot a machine and make it join a multicast session)
you need to add switches to the command line of ghost.exe on the disc.

Why spend money on Ghost?!?
We use CloneZilla here! Its amazing! We have it saving the images to a NAS box!
Its a small bootable CD which you can also setup to boot from a standard memory stick!
It now takes us about 15mins to rebuild a staff laptop!
And what more its FREE!!
Ghost is well worth the money IMO
Rather fond of PING at the moment. Imaged my new netbook with no problems, when Acronis went and cried in the corner.
PING is also free. If only I could get it to back up RAID 0.

You can create a autoboot ghost restore cd that will work totally without input but be carefull if someone puts it in a machine and gets it to boot from cd whatever computer its in will be ghosted.
It might be better creating a ghost boot floppy or cd. Boot the laptop from that and the tell it to create a image to am image. Point the location of the image to the dvd burner in the laptop. Now if you have one of the later versions it will ask if you have a boot floppy. Leave the boot floppy or boot cd in and it will grab an image. Then insert the dvd that you have to burn to. It will then burn the image.
When you have to image the machine. Insert the dvd and boot from it and it will boot into the ghost console but you will have to do about 5 clicks to get it to work which will mean you cannot do this by accident.
Just an idea.

Ghost will create a bootable floppy for you with the ghost software on. I think I used nero to create a image of the floppy and burn it on a cd.
Just an idea.

Just wanting to say thanks again - this software is amazing, can't believe I hadn't heard of it before.
I'm just created a bootable DVD with an image on for a laptop (as this laptop is always going wrong - user problem) so now when the laptop comes in I can have it back up in 10 minutes using this DVD.
