Imaging a pc without DHCP
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me the best way to image a computer where DHCP is not present?
(I did install DHCP on the server but this produced a number of problems for other systems and services).
All I want to do is build a computer and then make an image of it and apply it to a load of other machines.
Thanks for any advice.

14th June 2011, 03:20 PM #5 If you want you could load a copy of Windows PE and GimageX onto a USB stick/HDD along with the image and then do it from there - you would naturaly however only be able to do as many PCs as you have sticks/hdds.

We just search the mac address then send the image

Was that because a DHCP server allready exists in the organisation? if so you can use that yourself you don't need one just reserved for pxe booting.
Otherwise I don't think you can do pxe without dhcp, you can use a boot disc which then has the ip of your fog server or whatever hard coded into it.

15th June 2011, 04:25 PM #11 MDT also has the option of booting the PC to the network then specifying an IP manually if required all without DHCP so you are really not limited in the options that you can use its just going to take longer and be more fiddly without DHCP in place.

If you did require dhcp then you could configure one laptop or computer to be the dhcp server with a server OS to push out the images etc and put the computers you wanted to image on the same switch as said laptop which is seperate from your main network that way you could image and configure them how you wanted away from your main network ?
A home type netgear or linksys gigabit switch with 10 ports or maybe a 24 port switch you have laying around ?

I didnt literally mean like that, if you setup the first pc as required, image that and push that out as required
