Is your 'upstream server' error message a pop-up dialogue from a screen, or logged in an event log?
The only place I can see an 'upstream update server' is on the second tab of the component configuration->software update point component properties
Ours is set to 'synchronize from Microsoft Update'.

    All very strange!

@jc1875: It is indeed set to update from Microsft. The error message appears in the SMS_WSUS_CONFIGURATION_MANAGER log.

I can connect to the SCCM server on port 8530 via the WSUS MMC.

I have also discovered that I can force a synchronisation via the MMC and the product list has updated in there. The details in SCCM remain unchanged though

    Any ideas people?

I have also tried restarting the WSUS component services and rebooting the server. This is rather annoying!

It took me 4 reinstalls of the WSUS role on our 2k8r2 SCCM server (2007 SP2 R2), removing/installing the SUP in SCCM each time to get SCCM and WSUS to play nicely. Was made harder by the fact that I was using the native SCCM mode!
