Linux Noob here......

This is what I have

Centos 6.2 setup as a webserver to serve our new intranet page (joomla site)

Can someone point me in the direction of instructions (simple)on how to setup a FTP(vsftpd) server please?

I've come across webmin would this be helpful to me?

I'm not a fan of Webmin but that was from the early days when it was full of holes; I'm persuaded that these days it is a lot more secure and if you don't expose it to the Internet by natting it's port from the outside I don't think it would be a huge problem for you to use internally to help you learn.

Yes and no. Yes, it's OK for basic admin of stuff but if (when) something goes wrong, you are much better off at least being comfortable operating from a shell and editing the config files.

I have used webmin for years and find it helpful in a number of instances.

have you checked to see if ftp is up and running already?

My server is currently running Centos 5.8 with Joomla, to be honest Ive never used FTP on it - never needed too. I can use SCP over SSH does a more secure job.

Seriously look at SCP over SSh, no installing or configuring of anything required, you remotely access the server via SSH (putty) anyway so just use WinSCP and remotely access it that way for file transfer - I must admit also SCP has saved my bacon a few times!

Yup I would second this - FTP is good if you want Joe public to anonymously download files or multiple users to upload.

WinSCP is good alternative and removes the need to mess around with FTP if you have opened up SSH to the server.
