Enabling remote desktop
How can I enable remote desktop on ubuntu 12.04 so I can remote in from a win7 machine? It's just that I have fog setup on ubuntu and as I don't leave the server on all the time I was wanting to power down the machine remotely otherwise I'm going to need to leave a monitor and keyboard attached just to turn the thing off.
If you want to power it on remotely you will need to enable wol on that computer and you will need to send a magic packet to it to get it to start.
As for remote desktop, I believe you will need to install rdesktop. This assumes you have the gui/desktop version of ubuntu.
Powering on is ok by hand but I want to put the box out of the way so didn't want to use a monitor or keyboard and I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
use VNC - there is a howto here:
there should be no need - put webmin on your ubuntu box..
If you want remote poweron and your mainboard supports it, you can do it via WOL. I assume you didnt know you can get a Server version and a Desktop version of Ubuntu. That being the case im pretty sure at this stage that you're using the Desktop version, so you can do as carvjo suggest or heres a couple guides to get remote desktop working:
