Hi,
I am new to this and have found a puzzling problem. I have installed Ubuntu on a virtual machine and need to do some things as a root account. In the terminal it is asking for the root password which is fine but I haven't set one. I have rei-installed it because I thought that I had missed a step but I haven't. can someone tell me how to overcome this or reset the password?

Try sudo yourcommand
or if it insists on a true root password (which is kind of not good) you'll want to run sudo passwd root (and put in your own password first for sudo, and then the one you want to use for root twice)
In Ubuntu you don't ever need to login as root. You use sudo with your password.Quote:

I usually do this when I'm doing the initial setup. Once the server is deployed on the network I use SSH keys.

Sorry, maybe I explained bad :) You don't "login" with root. You just use it as sudo (e.g. above as @Gatt said )Quote:
