Thanks - I actually bought a Draytek Vigor 120 in the end as well, it seemed like the best solution.

I've used the older Draytek Vigor 100/110 ADSL modems at a few sites, never an issue with PPPoE. I'm sure the V120 is just as good.

On my new Atom-based home server it just froze on boot - setting the odd=off kernel option solved the issue, if that's any help.

I've just installed Debain Squeeze on my laptop. I tried Debian years ago, but had problems getting things working on my laptop.
What a difference a few years make.

Out of the box, the wireless works, as does the sound and brightness button controls; the only thing I had to do was add the non-free nvidia driver. In it went, and everything's hunky dory!

If you're installing off a live CD, use the wired ethernet rather than the wireless as even though the live CD works with WPA wireless, the installer routine only understands WEP. Once installed though, wireless is fine.

If past experiences had put you off Debian, it's all changed now.

The reason I tried it is one of my hobbies is computer music. I used Ubuntu but there were problems with the libsynth libraries. These were fixed in the upstream Debian repo, but I found out that they wouldn't make it to Ubuntu until the new release. I patched them in manually, but it was an aggravation for me.


Anyway, I've still got Ubuntu and Debian on dual boot, I'll give it a few days before I make the jump and go full Debian but it's looking really good.

What programs do you use? I've tried linux on occasion but have never found a music program which fully suits my needs and always end up going back to reason.

Rosegarden for me as I mix midi and audio in one sequencer.
Qtractor is superb also.
As for synths fluidsynth loaded up with soundfonts is great. Search the repos for ladspa plugins and the world is your whelk.

Right: a year later I've finally added another network port to the server and am getting around to setting up a PPPoE connection from Debian Squeeze. So, I have a Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL modem connected to a network port, that network port is then passed directly to a Debian Squeeze virtual machine via PCIBack. The virtual machine sees the network port as eth0 (it also has a bridged network connection provided by Xen which it sees as eth1).

I've installed and run pppoeconf, and it scans eth0 for a PPPoE access concentrator but doesn't find one, even though I've checked I've plugged the ADSL line in and the DSL light on the modem is a solid green, not flashing, which would seem to indicate it has an ADSL connection. Anyone any experience with pppoeconf or any ideas?
